Gustavo Minas.
Our brand ambassador from Brazil.
Urban Life, Shadow, and Social Rhythm.
Born in Cássia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1981, Gustavo Minas is a photographer and journalist whose work explores the subtle poetry of everyday urban life. After graduating in journalism from the State University of Londrina, Gustavo deepened his photographic practice by studying the language and history of photography with Carlos Moreira in São Paulo. This academic foundation, combined with his journalistic background, has shaped a thoughtful, socially aware approach to visual storytelling.
Since 2009, Gustavo has focused on documenting the daily rhythms of the cities he inhabits. His photography is characterized by strong compositions, dramatic use of light and shadow, and a deep sensitivity to human presence within architectural spaces. Rather than chasing spectacle, Gustavo finds meaning in repetition, routine, and fleeting interactions between people and their environments.
Currently based in Brasília, he works as a journalist and freelance photographer, contributing to both editorial and artistic projects. In 2017, his acclaimed series “Bus Station” received the Pictures of the Year LATAM award in the category The Future of the Cities. The project examined public transit spaces as social crossroads, revealing the quiet narratives unfolding within them. The series was later exhibited at the Centro de Fotografía de Montevideo in 2018 and at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021.
Gustavo’s first photobook, “Maximum Shadow, Minimal Light,” was published in 2019 by Edition Lammerhuber and accompanied by a solo exhibition at Freelens Galerie in Hamburg. He is also a member of the influential Burn My Eye collective and a photography instructor at Domestika, where he shares his approach with a global audience.
Through his work, Gustavo Minas demonstrates how photography can transform ordinary spaces into sites of reflection, revealing the social and emotional architecture of modern cities.
